Devon Hofmeyr: Who are the Bittereinders?
Devon Hofmeyr was granted bail together with several others after being arrested for ‘assault and public violence’. Who are the controversial group calling themselves the ‘Bittereinders’?
Famous singer Steve Hofmeyr made a Facebook post on Monday supporting his son.
The Bittereinders have made the news for their protests, including confronting Minister Bheki Cele about crime statistics.
Here’s more about the group, and how it affects ordinary South Africans.
DEVON HOFMEYR RELEASED ON R5, 000 BAIL
An arrested person can apply for bail during their court appearance, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
According to Steve Hofmeyr’s Facebook page, Devon Hofmeyr and three others were granted bail of R5, 000 each.
The next court appearance is on 4 April, 2024 for members of the Bittereinders.
As part of their bail conditions, the group may not protest ‘the cause of Groenwald’ says the post.
DEVON HOFMEYR: WHO ARE THE BITTEREINDERS?
According to their website, the Bittereinders are a South African civil rights group.
The Bittereinders exist to support ‘Afrikaner/boer’ interests, says the website. They aren’t exclusive to whites, says the group, though they have few non-white supporters in South Africa.
Their name means ‘bitter-enders’ in Afrikaans, referring to an old resistance group that existed during the Anglo-Boer War.
Devon Hofmeyr is the group’s founder, son of actor-singer Steve Hofmeyr. Steve has been in hot water with other civil rights groups, including the South African Human Rights Commission.
Also according to their website, the organisation strives for the ‘lost identity’ and ‘brotherhood’ of Afrikaner interests.
