Donald Trump’s offer to white farmers is labelled as based on disinformation and cheap politics by the FW de Klerk Foundation-written by RONELLE SNYDERS

The FW de Klerk Foundation has expressed strong opposition to US President Donald Trump’s attacks on South Africa and the offer of citizenship to white farmers who it believes are being treated unfairly.

Christo van der Rheede, CEO of the FW de Klerk Foundation, said that Trump’s actions were based on disinformation and had no basis in the truth.

“The challenges we face in South Africa are not just limited to white people. All of us are affected by crime, unemployment and ill-considered policies, especially economic ones,” he told the SABC.

Van der Rheede said Trump’s rhetoric and executive orders were dangerous and based on cheap politics that would cause great damage to the South African economy and the country’s agricultural industry.

“This is part of an ethnic nationalist revival. We have seen this happen in the US, France, Hungary and many European states and the South African right wing saw it as an opportunity to confront the non-racial democratic dispensation that was established in 1994,” Van der Rheede said.

He added that this is not in line with what the country is striving for. “If you read the Constitution, it says it belongs to all the people who live in it. It talks about a non-racial, non-sexist society, an accountable and responsive government and that is what we as South Africans need to challenge.”

Trump said on Friday that South African farmers were welcome to relocate to the U.S., confirming his baseless claim that the government was confiscating property from white people when he announced the suspension of federal funding.

“Any farmer with family from South Africa who wants to flee that country for security reasons will be invited to the United States of America with a fast track to citizenship,” he posted on Truth Social.

In a response, the government said it would not engage in “megaphone diplomacy.”

What is the FW de Klerk Foundation?
The FW de Klerk Foundation is a non-partisan organisation founded in 1999 by former South African President Frederik Willem de Klerk.

It is involved in activities related to “multi-community” countries and aims to support and nurture South Africa’s democracy. The Foundation’s principles are aligned with the South African constitution, multi-party democracy and free market economy. His proposed goals include supporting and promoting the constitution, promoting unity in diversity, helping charities for disabled and disadvantaged children, and providing information about De Klerk’s presidency.

Dr Theuns Eloff was the Executive Director of the Foundation from 1 July 2016. He was succeeded by the current chairman, Dave Steward. In 2006, the Foundation was involved in resolving tensions over an instruction by the Police Commissioner in the Western Cape Province that English should be the only language medium for police documentation, even in mainly non-English speaking areas of the Province.

The Foundation also incorporates the Center for Constitutional Rights (CFCR). The CFCR seeks to promote the values, rights and principles of the Constitution, to monitor developments, including policies and draft legislation that may affect the Constitution and the values, rights or principles contained therein, to inform people and organisations of their constitutional rights and to assist them in claiming their rights. The CFCR is headed by Phephelaphi Dube (from 1 May 2016) as Director of the CFCR and is advised by a leading group of constitutional experts under the patronage of the Honourable Justice Ian Farlam Archived 22 July 2015 at the Wayback Appeal Machine, retired judge of the Supreme Court.

The Foundation is a registered public benefit organisation (PBO) and a registered non-profit organisation. Donations are tax deductible and the Foundation issues certificates in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act No 58 of 1962 to all donors.

South African donors can make EFT payments. If you are a U.S. taxpayer, you can make a donation to the Foundation via an entity called The Foundation for Peace in Divided Societies. There is an email address, website as well as a US phone number available.

You can leave cash, shares or any other property to the Foundation by adding a codicil to your will or by including provisions in a new will.

The Foundation helps international donors who want to support worthy welfare causes in South Africa by identifying NGOs with proven records, negotiating with agencies and channelling payments.

Donors receive regular progress reports and the Foundation does not charge fees for these services. Examples of projects supported by this program can be found here.

Now the author is just wondering… is it about funds from the US that are now going to be limited that this foundation also wants to throw their penny into the poor purse now?*****

We would like to hear from those who have benefited from the funds raised since its inception.
