Elderly people attacked with a panga in Plettenberg Bay
An elderly couple was attacked by an armed man in Challenge Drive, Plettenberg Bay early Tuesday morning.
CCTV footage from cameras in the area shows the 70-year-old woman and 73-year-old man walking down the street before a man overwhelms them with an object that looks like a panga.
The video spread like wildfire on social media and shows the couple courageously fighting back against the attacker trying to grab the woman’s handbag. The attacker becomes increasingly aggressive, repeatedly stabbing them with the weapon.
“According to reports, the couple was walking down the street when the man suddenly attacked them from behind. The couple fought back, after which the attacker later grabbed the couple’s hats and fled the scene.”
“The injured victims were taken moments later in a private vehicle to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.”
Capt. Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk said police were investigating a case of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
A reward of R10 000 is offered for any information that will lead to the successful arrest and prosecution of the criminal.
Otto Olivier, operations manager of crime prevention association urges the public to come forward with the slightest bit of information. “We believe there is someone who knows who is responsible.”
