Elderly person in Bloemfontein raped, robbed and car stolen

“The suspect then sexually assaulted the victim with violence.”

An elderly woman from Dan Pienaar in Bloemfontein was raped in her home by an unknown man. “After sexually assaulting the elderly woman (77) on Friday (31/5), he stole some items from her home, including all the keys,” said Thabo Covane, Free State police spokesperson. “He also broke the garage door and stole her white Datsun Go.”

Police say the woman slept in her home in Winter Street, Dan Pienaar, at about 21:00. “Apparently she woke up a while later and was shocked to see an unknown man standing next to her bed with a smack,” Covane said.

‘Criminals target elderly people because of their vulnerability’

The man then forcibly sexually assaulted the victim. The Bayswater Police Department is investigating a case of house robbery with additional charges of rape and vehicle theft.

“Criminals target the elderly because of their vulnerability which highlights the need for years of security measures,” says Charnel Hattingh of Fidelity ADT. She says homeland security is important as strong locks and having emergency contacts on hand.

“Verify the identity of visitors before opening the door. When you are outside, inform someone about your plans and avoid isolated areas. Keep personal items safe,” she says.

Hattingh says while older people can protect themselves with these precautions, the younger generation still has a role to play. “Regularly visit or call elderly relatives or neighbors and offer to help them with chores or maintenance around the house.

They may no longer feel as confident as they once were with tasks like climbing ladders to replace light bulbs or carrying the groceries home. But knowing that you are available to help can potentially relieve some of their stress and anxiety and prevent them from becoming a victim of crime.”
