    Eskom increases power cuts

Eskom has announced that stage 3 load-shedding will continue to be implemented until further notice.

The power utility previously planned to drop load-shedding to stage 2 at 05:00 each morning for the foreseeable future.

“Due to the need to replenish emergency reserves and insufficient available generation capacity, stage 3 load-shedding will continue to be implemented until further notice,” Eskom said.

    Eskom’s previous load-shedding schedule — announced on Monday, 29 November 2023 — saw a rotation of stage 2 load-shedding from 05:00 to 16:00 each day and stage 3 from 16:00 to 05:00.

The power utility was forced to implement the load-shedding pattern after it took five generating units offline for repairs.

“Over the past 24 hours, five generation units were taken offline for repairs,” Eskom said in a statement on Monday.

“Additionally, the return to service of two generating units that were on planned maintenance was delayed due to an opportunity to perform preventative maintenance.”

The power utility had a total of 23,994MW of generation capacity offline at the time — almost 2,500MW less than the anticipated evening peak for Monday.

“Unplanned outages are at 16,473MW of generating capacity, while the capacity out of service for planned maintenance is at 7,521MW,” it said.

“Eskom’s load forecast for the evening peak demand tonight is 26,411MW.”
