Owning a vehicle in South Africa requires the driver to abide by the rules of the road which you are tested on prior to obtaining a driver’s license.
REASON TO ABIDE BY THE RULES OF THE ROAD IN SA
Bylaws may vary from city to city but the rules of the road remain the same, and breaking such may lead to punishable offences including fines and impounding of your vehicle.Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) elaborates on its latest Tip of the Week as to why your car may be impounded.
EMPD Media Liaison Officer Constable Ignatius Maphike says Metro Police Officials would do a thorough investigation of the vehicle, which includes checking the vehicle’s condition, verifying the engine number, and recording other important information, before opting to impound the car.
“The Officials are obligated to let the owner of the vehicle know that his/her car has been impounded.”

YOUR VEHICLE CAN BE TAKEN FOR THESE REASONS
Here are some offences that can get your car impounded:A parking offence causing an obstruction.
Any car deemed to be abandoned on a public road.
A vehicle not displaying any form of identification.
Buses and taxis can also be impounded for not having a permit or operating contrary to a permit.
Parking in a tow-away zone, Ambulance, or emergency services area.
Parking on a red line or no parking area.
Vehicles with missing or false number plates.
Illegal street racing.
Unroadworthy cars.
