Farm attack: Elderly couple and grandson held at gunpoint, robbed, Virginia

A farm attack took place on Tuesday 15 November 2022, on a farm outside the town of Virginia in the Free State province of South Africa. The attack was only brought to the media’s attention a week after it happened.

 

The owner of the farm, Mr. Jan Wentzel (80), stays in town because his children feel it is safer for him not to stay on the farm.

Mr. Wentzel arrived on the farm just after 09:00 and was busy taking items which he bought from the bakkie when two armed black males appeared next to him. They were wearing gloves and balaclavas.

The attackers forced Mr. Wentzel into the garage where they tied his hands behind his back with cable ties. They pointed a firearm at him the whole time.

Mr. Wentzel has a domestic worker and gardener and they were also tied up.

The attackers seems to have exact knowledge of the house and walked straight to the room where Mr. Wentzel’s grandson, Wentzel Erasmus (20), was still sleeping.

He is a student at the University of the North West but visited the farm in order for him to study. The attackers woke him up with a firearm to his head.

The attackers then went to the bedroom where Mr. Wentzel’s wife, Elsa (79), was sleeping. Elsa is physically disabled.

The attackers took Elsa’s phone and also took rings from her fingers and a necklace from her neck.

The attackers also removed two firearms, money and jewelry from the safe before they fled the scene.

Mr. Wentzel had to seek help from a neighbour who called a police member to attend the scene.
Mr Wentzel said it is very clear to him that the attackers had exact information about the layout of the house and his movements.
A white car was seen driving up and down in the street before the attack took place whilst an occupant of the car was on his phone the whole time.

Tje question has to be asked, ‘who could have given information to the attackers’?
