A former Limpopo police captain, Dennis Paradise Nghunyulu, has been convicted and sentenced in the Giyani Regional Court for murder and attempted murder. The incident took place in 2019 at Nghunyulu’s tavern in Makosha village, Giyani. During a late-night fight with a client, Nghunyulu used his wife’s licensed firearm to shoot the customer and his brother, killing 23-year-old Osi Mkhabela and injuries to his older brother as a result.
The community reacted with anger and caused unrest by burning the accused’s tavern and vehicles. Nghunyulu was later arrested and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for murder and three years for attempted murder, where the sentences will serve concurrently. The Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police welcomed the ruling and emphasised that it sends a strong message of responsibility to all, irrespective of their position.
