Four suspects, between the ages of 16 and 19, are due to appear in court on charges of murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and robbery after allegedly killing 79-year-old Mpumalanga farmer Theo Frederik Bekker. The suspects were arrested less than two hours after the incident in the Free State, where they brutally attacked Bekker and his wife at their home in Grootvlei, near Balfour. The attackers stole cash, firearms, and the couple’s Renault Kwid before the stolen vehicle overturned in Villiers, where they were arrested shortly afterwards. Police found two stolen firearms in their possession.
The incident took place on Sunday morning when the four suspects allegedly forced Bekker into his home, gave money and firearms, and brutally assaulted him and his wife. Bekker succumbed to his injuries, and his wife was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga strongly condemned the farm attack.
