Willem Petzer has a video message this morning to Gen. Maj. Jan Scheepers, the acting provincial police commissioner in Limpopo, directed. The message is about the incident during which Francois van der Merwe of the Bittereinders allegedly wanted to intervene to protect former mayor of Groblersdal, Dries Olivier, who was part of the march. In his “reaction”, Van der Merwe allegedly bumped a police officer himself. He was arrested and is still in custody, waiting for his bail application to be brought to court.
The bail application will be found in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, February 1, and according to Petzer, the court proceedings will be attended by more supporters of Van der Merwe than was present during the march.
Willem Petzer also expanded in the video this morning about the law firm that will act on behalf of Van der Merwe and the work that Van der Merwe has already done in communities, during which he, according to him, shone the police in their absence.
Col. Malesela Ledwaba said the charges against Van der Merwe are those of assault and the preventing of a police officer in the execution of his duties. While Van der Merwe remained in custody, the police investigation continued.
