The life and literary legacy of George Orwell is to be commemorated in the United Kingdom with a new £2 coin.
The coin will be issued to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the writer’s death.
Orwell died on 21 January 1950 at the age of 46. He is most remembered for his novels warning about the dangers of totalitarianism, such as Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.
The BBC reports that the coin will be available from this week and the design is based on the theme of totalitarianism.
Orwell, who was born in 1903 in British India as Eric Blair, was a prolific writer and journalist. While Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four are his best-known works with many of the themes and phrases from the novels becoming common in popular culture, he wrote on many topics. He volunteered in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, where he was severely wounded in the fighting. His experience in the war shaped many of his later political views, especially his hatred of totalitarianism.
