KeymasterGunmen rob 150 worshippers at mosque in Mpumulanga.
A group of armed men robbed about 150 people who were attending Friday prayers at a mosque in Kwaggafontein, near KwaMhlanga, in Mpumulanga province, on January 19, 2024.
According to the police, the gunmen entered the mosque around 1 p.m. and ordered the congregants to lie down on the floor.
They then proceeded to take their cellphones, wallets, jewellery, and other valuables. No one was injured during the robbery, but the victims were left traumatised and shaken.
The police spokesperson, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, said that the robbers fled the scene in a white Toyota Quantum minibus with an unknown registration number. He appealed to anyone who might have information about the incident or the suspects to contact the police.
“We are investigating a case of armed robbery and we are following all possible leads to arrest the perpetrators. We urge the public to assist us with any information that can help us to bring these criminals to justice,” he said.
Hlathi also condemned the robbery as a “cowardly and despicable act” that violated the sanctity of a place of worship and the dignity of the worshippers.
“We are appalled by this incident and we will do everything in our power to ensure that the culprits are caught and face the full might of the law. We also want to assure the Muslim community and the public at large that we are working hard to ensure their safety and security,” he said.
The chairperson of the mosque, Abdul Aziz, said that the robbery was a “shocking and heartbreaking” experience for the congregants, who were peacefully performing their religious duties.
“We are very saddened and disturbed by what happened. We have never experienced such a thing before. We are grateful that no one was hurt, but we are still in shock and fear. We hope that the police will catch these criminals soon and that justice will be served,” he said.
Aziz also thanked the local community and other religious leaders for their support and solidarity in the aftermath of the robbery.
“We appreciate the messages of sympathy and encouragement that we have received from our neighbours and friends. We also appreciate the visits and prayers from other religious leaders who came to comfort us. We are thankful for their kindness and compassion,” he said.
Aziz said that the mosque would continue to operate as normal and that the congregants would not be deterred by the robbery.
“We will not let this incident stop us from practising our faith and serving our community. We will remain strong and united in the face of this adversity. We will also pray for the guidance and protection of Allah and for the peace and harmony of our country,” he said.
