KeymasterIn what was described as a notable success, the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, arrested a Nigerian man, Benjamin Stanley Okwudili, for possession of precious metals.
Gauteng Gauteng spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Ramovha said Okwudili was arrested at Linbro Park, Sandton, after he was caught in possession of suspected precious metals estimated at R50 million.
Ramovha said the Johannesburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) carried out a “diligent” intelligence-driven operation on February 27 in terms of contravention of the Precious Metals Act, which led to the arrest.
“The operation was carried out following critical information about palladium illegally stored at a residence on 1st Road, Linbro Park. The team acted immediately and proceeded to the identified location. Upon their arrival, they met a Nigerian man, Mr. Scott. Benjamin Stanley Okwudili,” Ramovha said.
The officers introduced themselves and asked permission to search the premises, which the Hawks said was granted.
“Despite the fact that no illegal items were found in the home, a thorough search of the garage revealed a gold suitcase wrapped in clear plastic wrap. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the suitcase contained approximately 90 kg of silver stones, which are believed to be palladium, with an estimated value of R50 million,” Ramovha said.
Palladium is a silvery-white metal that resembles platinum. It is used in many types of manufacturing processes, especially for electronics and industrial products.
When asked about the bag, the Hawks said Okwudili said he received it from Congo and expected a buyer to come and pick it up.
“However, he failed to produce any documentation authorizing his possession of such minerals,” Ramovha said.
As a result, the SA Police Service’s Local Criminal Records Centre was called to the scene for further processing.
Okwudili, 55, was then arrested. He was detained at Sandringham police station after being charged.
The Nigerian citizen appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the case was postponed to March 10 for confirmation of Okwudili’s status in South Africa.
Meanwhile, Gauteng provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa Kadwa welcomed Okwudili’s arrest.
“This operation serves as a stern warning to all precious metals traders: compliance with the law is non-negotiable. Authorities will take decisive action against any individuals or entities found in violation of the Precious Metals Act,” he said.
