Passengers traveling to OR Tambo International Airport are advised to allocate extra time for their journey due to increased security measures ahead of tomorrow’s presidential inauguration.
Furthermore, the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed its readiness for the arrival of foreign dignitaries at the airport on Wednesday, coinciding with the inauguration of the 7th Administration.
SECURITY AND ROAD CLOSURES FOR PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION
ACSA has rolled out comprehensive safety and security protocols in collaboration with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation. Furthermore, ACSA Regional General Manager Jabulani Khambule emphasised that access to the airport precinct will be limited.
“Travelers are advised that there will be limited access to the airport precinct due to several road closures and high police activity this week,” said Khambule.
“Complete or partial road closures will affect routes such as Cargo Road and Arrivals Road from Tuesday to midnight on Saturday.”
Furthermore, these measures aim to manage the arrival of heads of state who will be greeted by the National Ceremonial Guard and ceremonial dancers. Moreover, to facilitate this, a special gate has been allocated for national government leaders, foreign ministers, and other government guests arriving and departing on international flights.
COORDINATION AND OPERATIONAL READINESS
ACSA assures that it is fully prepared to handle the influx of foreign dignitaries while maintaining stringent security checks.
“ACSA is ready to not only handle the pressure and logistics for the arrival of foreign heads of state but also to ensure that all necessary security checks and measures are in place,” Khambule stated.
ACSA’s approach includes coordination with various law enforcement agencies to implement additional security measures effectively.
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
To ensure smooth traffic flow, vehicles on airport roadways will be diverted by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department to the departures (upper) roadway and Parkade 2 South, Levels 2 and 3, for pick-up and drop-off purposes. Passengers are urged to plan their travel accordingly and allow for extra time to navigate these changes.
The inauguration of the President of the 7th Administration of South Africa will take place on Wednesday, 19 June at the Union Buildings, Pretoria in the City of Tshwane. President-elect Cyril Ramaphosa will be sworn-in by the Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, Justice Raymond Zondo and he will take an Oath or Affirmation which text is included in Schedule 2 of the Constitution.
The South African reported, number of roads around the Union Buildings in Tshwane will be closed due to the presidential inauguration.
Additionally, road closures around the Union Buildings for the presidential inauguration will be implemented from 3:00 on Wednesday, 19 June, until 6:00 on Thursday, 20 June.
