Joshlin Smith, whose disappearance shocked South Africa, planned to have her children “taken away”. This is according to testimony in the ongoing case against her mother, Racquel ‘Kelly’ Smith, her mother’s boyfriend, Jacquin ‘Boeta’ Appollis, and a third accused, Steveno ‘Steffie’ van Rhyn, who are charged with kidnapping and human trafficking.
Steven Coetzee, a Saldanha Bay evangelist, told the court that he had spoken to her in 2023. ”I asked her where her children were, and she said they were in Boeta’s care. She told me that it was a bad family, and that was why she planned to have the children taken away.”
“”She also mentioned that she was waiting for people who were supposed to come to her, but they had let her down. She said that if they came this time and didn’t have the full R20 000, she would settle for R5 000.”
According to Coetzee, she wouldn’t tell him whom she planned to give the children to.
He added that Smith had told her that the Middelpos settlement was going to look like a movie scene, with frenetic search activity: “They will search but won’t find anything because I will make the child go far away.”
Coetzee said that when he realised that Joshlin had gone missing, he attempted to speak to the police, but they didn’t take his statement.
In separate testimony, Edna Maart, Joshlin’s school teacher, testified that Kelly had told her that Joshlin was being transported by ship to West Africa.
