The African National Congress (ANC) has expelled its former leader and president Jacob Zuma.

This is according to a document by the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee dated 29 July that is circulating on social media.

    ANC EXPELS JACOB ZUMA

The South African previously reported that Zuma was charged and suspended after contravening the party’s rules when he launched the MK Party on 16 December 2023 in Orlando, Soweto. The ANC invoked Rule 25 of its constitution and charged him with bring the party into disrepute.

The former president, although leading another party that is represented in Parliament, was still a member of the ANC, albeit under suspension. But Fikile Mbalula, the ANC’s secretary-general, said Zuma had already expelled himself from the party.

As per the document, the NDC found Zuma “guilty of contravening Rule 25 of the ANC constitution for prejudicing the integrity or repute of the organisation by acting in collaboration with a registered political party, to wit the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, which is not in alliance with the ANC, in a manner contrary to the aims, policies and objectives of the ANC.

“The charged member [Zuma] is expelled from the ANC,” ANC NDC chairperson Enver Surty said.

Surty said Zuma has 21 days to appeal to the National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal.
