Milnerton Lagoon: ‘No basic measures in place’ to contain stink
Concerns about the environmentally hazardous Milnerton Lagoon have been ongoing for years, prompting residents to mobilise and lobby authorities to take action.
The Milnerton Lagoon is a key focus, but Cape Town’s wetlands and rivers are under similar pressures.
The Black River is also starting to smell, likely due to burst sewage pipes.
In September 2023, floods and heavy rainfall washed out toxic sludge. Since the floods, the lagoon has seen the return of wildlife. However, progress has stalled and ongoing pollution since October 2023 has resulted in ‘bad smells’ which Marx refers to as ‘horribly disappointing’.
On Tuesday, the Koeberg Road Pump Station broke down, causing massive amounts of raw sewage to flow into the stormwater canal, the river and the ocean.
Temporary sandbags to curb the pollution were poorly built and have collapsed.
The City’s response lacks urgency, argues Marx.
“No measure is in place to contain the spill into the lagoon. A real basic solution that isn’t working which is frustrating. Things that could be done don’t seem to be treated with the urgency they deserve.”
– Caroline Marx, Rethink The Stink
Marx encourages everyone to take control of clean water management in their areas by checking the City’s water quality data of rivers and oceans on its website.
If you’re unhappy with the water quality, contact your councillor.
