More than 400 police vehicles in the Free State are in disuse
Approximately 449 police vehicles in the Free State are currently in disuse.
The Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Jabu Mbalula, confirmed the number in response to a question in the legislature.
The FF Plus-LPW in the Free State, Armand Cloete, says the vehicles are currently unusable due to, among other things, repairs and inspections. According to him, this is worrying because the vehicles can be used especially in rural areas to ensure residents’ safety.
Cloete says according to organised agriculture in this province, just over 100 vehicles are needed to be able to effectively implement the rural safety strategy in the Free State.
This strategy entails, among other things, that every rural police station must have at least one police vehicle that is used for rural security. According to Mbalula, there is not a single police station in the province that has a vehicle allocated for the sole purpose of rural safety.
Cloete says in this province where stock theft is a huge problem, every available source should be used to combat crime in rural areas.
He says the FF Plus will insist in the relevant portfolio committee in the legislature that the department explain why so many vehicles are in disuse.
According to Cloete, the party will also request the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, to investigate the matter.
