Cases of the new Jn.1 Covid variant, a subvariant of the Omicron FAMILY , have now been reported in South Africa. This variant is currently responsible for the majority of the Covid cases in the US and Europe. The World Health Organization (WHO) said the Jn.1 variant spread quickly and classified it as an important variant. According to the WHO, Jn.1’s risk to the public is still very low, The National Institute of Communicable Diseases said there was no reason for panic. So far, 11 cases of Jn.1 have been reported in the Western Cape and one in Gauteng.
