Thousands of Sudanese refugees reach neighboring countries*******************************
Apr 26, 2023 #Sudan
Paramilitaries from one of Sudan’s warring factions have broken into a number of jails and released prisoners. The freed detainees include suspected war criminal Ahmed Haroun.
The International Criminal Court accuses him of crimes against humanity.
There are reports of sporadic fighting from the capital Khartoum on the second day of a three-day truce. Thousands of residents of the city have been fleeing to neighboring countries.
A warning: some viewers may find images in our next report disturbing.
The 72-hour ceasefire agreement in Sudan has provided an opportunity for many countries to undertake mass evacuations by road, air, and sea.
This includes Germany, which has now ended its evacuation operation after helping more than 700 people flee the country – including around 200 German citizens, according to the German Defence Ministry.

Sudan: Death Toll Tops 420 as Fear Grows Fighting Between Rival Generals Could Lead to Proxy War*****************************
Apr 24, 2023, Latest Shows
The United States and other countries moved to evacuate diplomats and citizens from Sudan over the weekend amid fighting between rival military factions that have killed at least 420 people and injured over 3,700 more, in a crisis that began on April 15 when the Sudanese military and the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces began exchanging fire in the capital Khartoum, further dashing hopes of a return of civilian rule in the country. CNN reports the powerful Russian mercenary group Wagner has backed the RSF by providing the paramilitaries with surface-to-air missiles. Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin has denied the report but offered on Friday to act as a mediator between the two warring factions. Meanwhile, many residents remain trapped in Khartoum with dwindling supplies of food, water, medicine, and power. For more on the crisis, we speak with Khalid Mustafa Medani, associate professor of political science and Islamic studies who chairs the African Studies Program at McGill University. He says neither side has much support from the civilian population, which has shown an overwhelming commitment to a democratic transition. “It’s not so much a civil war, but essentially a fight to the death between two generals,” says Medani.

Sudan: How are civilians impacted by the ongoing conflict?*********************************
Streamed live on Apr 26, 2023 #sudan #aljazeeraenglish #ajstream
It’s been more than ten days since warring generals in Sudan tipped the already struggling country into a new level of chaos and uncertainty. The escalating violence between military forces has left hundreds of civilians dead, thousands injured and countless others trapped or displaced. As Generals Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, the leader of the paramilitary group RSF, fight for control of the country, it’s Sudanese civilians who are paying the price.
The escalation in violence comes amid negotiations over the future of the country’s security sector. Those talks followed progress on a framework agreement that had put the country on a potential path to civilian rule, following the 2021 military coup.
Already facing a protracted humanitarian crisis with one-third of the country in need of humanitarian assistance, citizens now face a deepening catastrophe. Access to food, water, electricity, and medical services is now all but impossible while thousands remain trapped or displaced as aid groups have suspended services and have left the country.
In this episode of The Stream, we discuss the deepening humanitarian crisis in Sudan and how civilians are affected by the ongoing fighting.

Ambushed in South Sudan (Full Length)*********************************
8,596,896 views Mar 12, 2014
The war in South Sudan began in murky circumstances in mid-December, when tribal factions within the country’s army, the SPLA, began fighting each other in the center of the capital, Juba.
The SPLA quickly fractured into two camps: an insurgency drawn from members of former vice president Riek Machar’s Nuer tribe and troops who remained loyal to President Salva Kiir, of the Dinka tribe.
Both sides have been accused of committing gross human rights abuses during the conflict.
VICE News arrived in Juba and found the army desperate to dispel rumors that rebels were advancing on the capital. Soldiers were keen to take our correspondents on a trip with them into the bush to recapture the strategic city of Bor from the rebels… only the raid didn’t turn out quite as they had expected.
