Designated as a Variation of Interest (VOI) by the WHO, Eris (also known as EG.5) is a subvariation of the Omicron line that originated in November 2021. Its prevalence has steadily increased, with more than 7,000 ranges from 51 countries reported as of August 7, 2023. Although EG.5 has shown characteristics such as increased prevalence and immune deprivation, there are no observed changes in disease severity. The overarching global risk posed by EC.5 remains assessed as low, yet its growth advantage and immunodeficiency properties could potentially lead to an increase in case rise and broader dominance in certain countries or globally.
