Poachers are being blamed for the fire that claimed the lives of six firefighters in the Midlands over the weekend. By Lauren Hendricks
The blaze raged at Stirling Farm, adjacent to the Sappi Pinewoods plantation.
“The tragedy is alleged to have started by poachers at the bottom of the valley, which started fires to drive animals out so that their dogs could hunt them,” says Umgeni Mayor Chris Pappas.
“The brave men and women who attended to this fire incorporated a number of different agencies, both public and private, from Sappi to Umgungundlovu Fire.”
Three firefighters died at the scene while another three succumbed to their burn wounds in hospital.
Two crew members are still receiving treatment.
The paper mill company, Sappi, says it got a call from the farm owner asking for assistance.
The company dispatched a firefighting crew of 16 with three fire trucks.
Sappi says adverse weather conditions in KZN and Mpumalanga have led to wildfires raging for the last ten days in the areas around its plantations.
