POKING A SLEEPING LION WITH A STICK

I think what a lot of people tend to forget is that Afrikaans people are entirely indigenous to South Africa. Not indigenous in the true sense of the word – only the Khoisan are – but by virtue of the fact that their entire culture exists here. Including their unique and exclusive language.
The biggest clue to this is in their name…Afrikaner…which loosely translated means “People of Africa”.
This alone should be enough to tell the world that they are going nowhere. Many generations of their existence is entrenched in the fine southern soil on this sunny tip of Africa, and these fine, God-fearing, down-to-earth people have no other place to call home. Neither do they want one.

But while they are warm, hospitable, peace-loving people, they are also inordinately courageous, and certainly didn’t carve out a new nation in the harsh landscapes of Africa by being weak. The expression “n’ boer maak ‘n plan” is not an idle one!
I personally love Afrikaans people, and have spent much of my life active in their music industry.

So when I witness the deliberate marginalisation of these patient people, the farm attacks, and particularly the recent chants by Malema and his racist comrades: “Shoot to kill! Kill the Boer! Kill the farmer!”, I wonder if those responsible know what a dangerous game they are playing?
Because, while the Afrikaner is not an unreasonable person, he reminds me of the old saying: “Beware the anger of a patient man”.

To use an analogy, if the Afrikaner were a snake, he would be a puff adder. Unlike many other snakes, the puff adder is a peaceful, slow moving, non-aggressive snake. One has to practically stand on it before it will strike. But when it does, it is the fastest striking snake in Africa, and deadly.

I have a strong conviction that the Afrikaner is fast reaching the end of his tether. “The Boer” as he is often called, is twitching. And when he finally turns his large, sun-browned body against his protagonists, I know for sure which side I would want to be on.

If I were to caution the Malemas of this world who are bleating for confrontation, it would be with a short, sharp history lesson in just two words: BLOOD RIVER.
On the 16th of December 1838, 464 Boer Pioneers (Voortrekkers), including 200 indigenous servants, led by Andries Pretorius, held off over 20000 attacking Zulu warriors, and ultimately killed over 3000 of them. While only 3 of the Voortrekkers were lightly wounded.
This event became known as The Battle of Blood River because the Ncome River alongside which it was fought ran red with the blood of slain warriors.

I personally wish for nothing but peace in this beautiful land and hope that the term “civil war” is never used in the history of South Africa.
But “The Boer” is, without doubt, one of God’s people who WILL fight to the death before he gives up what is his, and those who would go up against him, including the government, must do so with grave caution. Because, while our government continues to turn a blind eye to the obvious antagonisation of The Afrikaner, and pursues their reckless policy of expropriation of land without compensation, they must know that they are doing nothing less than poking a sleeping lion with a stick.
