     shootout between police and a gang believed to be responsible for robberies related to online shopping led to the arrest of 11 suspects, and the recovery of two unlicensed firearms in Winterveld, Pretoria, on Friday, 10 May 2024. The suspects were about to rob a man they were lured into buying a truck advertised on Facebook, Marketplace, Ge

    The Central Transvaal police’s crime intelligence team received a tip regarding a man who was about to be robbed after responding to a Facebook ad for a truck that was for sale. A team consisting of members of the Central Transvaal Highway Patrol Unit and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) was mobilised to arrest the suspects. The team watched them closely and noticed that the unsuspecting buyer had met with the suspects.

    As the team approached, the suspects began firing shots at the police officers who responded by firing back. One suspect was shot and wounded, while ten other suspects were arrested without injuries. Police found two unlicensed firearms and ammunition from the suspects.

    Central Transvaal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni expressed his gratitude to the police officers for their excellent work in apprehending the criminals responsible for robberies that are going on in Winterveld.

    Police want to warn members of the community against fake online advertisers who keep robbing the unsuspecting buyers.

    The following basic safety tips should always be considered before buying or selling online;

    – Avoid communicating with buyers or sellers outside of Facebook as much as you can,

    – Do not share your personal information such as banking details or physical address;

    – If you meet a buyer or seller in person, arrange to meet in a public and well-lit area or at the nearest police station;

    – Do more research on the buyer or seller by visiting their private Facebook profile, a ‘red flag’ is raised when his or her profile has only recently been created.
