For a police general who is second in command of crime intelligence to sit at a table with an alleged racketeer at an EFF dinner whose leader, Julius Malema, re-incited people to murder farmers over the weekend is extremely worrying.
That action of Maj. Gen. Feroz Khan is disgraceful and a slap in the face to all South Africans grappling with widespread crime and corruption. It also raises substantive questions about the police’s seriousness about farm murders.
Khan, according to media reports, was a guest at a gala dinner in Ekurhuleni last Thursday to mark the EFF’s tenth anniversary. He shared a table with controversial tobacco boss Adriano Mazzotti.
Khan’s presence is probably also emblematic of Malema’s apparent opinion that he is above the law regarding his statements inciting racial hatred and murder of farmers.
Just after the Johannesburg High Court found that the HRC was wrong in finding that Malema had not broken the law with his statements that whites should not be murdered “by now”, Malema reportedly sang the song “kill the farmer” again yesterday in front of a packed FNB stadium. It shows his contempt for the court’s ruling.
Khan’s presence shows unequivocally his close ties to the EFF. Apart from the message it sends to South Africans about crime, it is also contemptuous and callous towards victims of crime.
His socialization with Mazzotti reinforces the suspicion that crime intelligence is corrupt and part of crime syndicates.
He also stated his political preference which is undesirable for senior executives of the police. This could contribute to thwarting investigations into the EFF. The minister must establish a code of conduct prohibiting such actions.
For the national police spokesman, brig. Athlenda Mathe, to speak well of Khan’s actions by saying the police are an apolitical organisation, is inappropriate and short-sighted.
The police cannot distance himself from Khan’s actions as easily as the person who is second in command of a unit such as crime intelligence.
You are known to your friends and when your circle of friends includes people who are allegedly involved in crime and who pursue murder and racial hatred, the red lights should flash.
I will ask questions in Parliament about this to the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, as well as the National Police Commissioner, Gen. Fannie Masemola. The police must say whether he identifies with people like Mazzotti and Malema.
