The organisation, Cape Forum, says it welcomes the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape’s announcement that it has withdrawn its decision to make statements in English only.
The head of community activation at Cape Forum, Bernard Pieters, says the initial decision was in the first place contrary to section 6(3)(1) of the Constitution, which stipulates that provincial governments must use a minimum of two official languages.
Pieters says it is gratifying that good judgment prevailed and that this decision was revoked. He says it would have had a negative impact at the community level.
According to him, English is probably not the police officers’ first language either, which means mistakes can easily slip in.
AfriForum’s Head of Cultural Affairs, Alana Bailey, welcomed the fact that the decision was reversed so quickly.
