Pollsmoor escapee is back behind bars WRITTEN BY Ronelle Snyders
Yanga Wayithi (35), who escaped from Pollsmoor Prison, is safely back behind bars. Wayithi is serving a six-month sentence for theft and trespassing and is part of those who maintain the facility’s grounds.
Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for correctional services, confirmed to Nuusflits that Wayithi was re-arrested at approximately 01:30 this morning (Wednesday). A full-scale search has been launched and Wayithi will now be additionally charged with escape from lawful custody.
Makgothi Thobakgale, the National Commissioner of Correctional Services, praised the swift action by law enforcement authorities and officers involved in the re-arrest.
“This arrest reaffirms our commitment to maintaining the integrity of the correctional system. We remain determined to ensure that all offenders are held accountable and public safety remains our top priority,” said Makgothi Thobakgale, the National Commissioner of Correctional Services.
An investigation is being conducted into the circumstances of the escape.
“Appropriate measures will be taken against any errors identified. In addition, security protocol at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre is being reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future,” says Nxumalo.
