President Cyril Ramaphosa highlights significant progress in implementing the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, which highlights government’s commitment to prevent future state capture. The commission, which concluded its public hearings two years ago, exposed an organised blackout of billions of rands by manipulating the operations of state institutions. In his weekly public address, Ramaphosa noted that although the investigation had a significant cost of nearly R1 billion, it ultimately protected billions of rands for the country.
Ramaphosa highlighted progress in reclaiming illegal profit as a result of State Capture, with R13 billion freezing orders granted to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which resulted in the successful recovery of more than R5 billion for the state. He indicates that nine cases involving 41 indictments and 12 companies are currently advancing through the courts out of the 205 recommended criminal investigations and potential prosecutions. Ramaphosa reaffirmed the restoration of integrity and effectiveness in affected state institutions, achieved in part through the appointment of competent leaders to guide them.
