Ransom demand made for kidnapped GQ doctor
The Hawks in the Eastern Cape say a ransom was demanded for the doctor who was abducted in Kwazakhele in Gqeberha on Monday.
A spokesperson for the Hawks Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana told Algoa FM News on Tuesday that Dr Bongani Qini was kidnapped from his surgery by unknown men at approximately 14:45.
According to Mhlakuvana, who did not confirm the ransom amount, nothing else was taken from the surgery except the doctor and his car, which was later found abandoned in one of the townships in the metro.
He also rejected rumours of the doctor being rescued and said they are following up on all leads to ensure Dr Qini’s safe return.
Meanwhile, local politician Nqaba Bhanga expressed great concern in a Facebook post on Tuesday evening following the doctor’s abduction.
“I appeal to the city leadership and civil society to stand up,” Bhanga wrote.
Algoa FM News previously reported on the spate of kidnappings in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Since the start of the year, Algoa FM News reported on six kidnappings and one of a Kariega teacher who faked his kidnapping.
