Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago says the bank has reached out to the Pan South African Language Board to reconsider the matter over the alleged spelling error on the upgraded hundred rand note.
On the new R100 note, the Xitsonga translation was changed from “Reserve Bank”, with the second ‘N’ in Bangi Nkulu being omitted. The word now reads as Bangi Kulu. Some Xitsonga speakers said it was wrong and the previous version of “Bangi Nkulu” was the accepted form.
Kganyago said after complaints were received by members of the Vatsonga community about the spelling of the Xitsonga word for ‘Reserve Bank’, the matter was referred back and the bank is awaiting feedback. The governor stressed that the central bank’s recent campaign to educate the public about the new security and design features is helping to strengthen the public’s trust and confidence in the currency.
