SAPS blows over R42 million worth of petrol for GDP protection
Over the past six years, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has spent more than R42,67 million on petrol and diesel fuel simply for its GDP protection fleet.
According to the Minister’s response, the National GDP Protection Centre in Gauteng was the largest spender in 2023/24 and filled their GDP transport fleet with more than R2.2 million worth of fuel, more than double the second highest spender. The second largest abuser of public funds is Mpumalanga, with more than R1,1 million for the year.
While South Africans are suffering from crushing living costs, including higher fuel prices, ANC GDP cadres are taking the taxpayers for a ride without putting their hands in their pockets.
The ANC recently increased the SAPS’s GDP protection allocation in the mid-term budget by more than R52 million. In fact, the budget allocation for these services has increased by more than 25% over the past five years. Other SAPS spending programmes were not so lucky, with crime intelligence operations increasing by only 11,5%, and the entire crime prevention programme by a dismal 12,4%.
It’s not just the national ANC government that has put its hands in the taxpayer’s wallet, in the City of Johannesburg, which is in the grip of a major water crisis, the ANC/EFF/PA-led doomsday coalition has been bulging through a R3 million monthly spending in their last budget to bring even more bodyguards and fancy cars to the mayor, providing the speaker and their cadres.
A DA-led government will cut these costs and reallocate much-needed funds to government projects that South Africans need most. Additional resources will be released by destroying the bloated SAPS middle millionaire management, which makes no contribution to fighting crime. By building a new government culture based on excellence, transparency and accountability to the people, the DA promises to deliver a professional administration and an independent public service that delivers to everyone, and not just the elite and connected few.
The excessive funding to SAPS GDP protection proves that the ANC only cares about protecting its own politically connected cadres, rather than the people of South Africa who fear becoming one of the 85 people who are murdered or the 169 people who are sexually assaulted, every single day.
It is time for us to remove the ANC who wants to focus on GDP protection rather than its murder rate, we have a Minister who cares more about his media appearances than visible policing and detectives. It is high time that we get rid of this manipulative government and vote for the DA to save South Africa.
