The Competition Commission has referred a complaint against Sasol for exorbitant prices of natural gas to the Competition Tribunal. The commission found that Sasol had contravened the Competition Act and obtained profit returns of up to 72% on the product, with exorbitant prices continuing for nearly a decade to date.
The commission also found that Sasol Gas’ exorbitant prices to gas dealers and industrial customers ultimately affect the pricing to the end consumers, as gas dealers and industrial customers usually pass on these costs to consumers.
The commission said Sasol Gas had not provided the relevant information it requested during the investigation.
