Smallholding murder outside Bloemfontein
The body of Piet Bester (63), former magistrate and former stronghold for the Free State and Greece, was found in a pool of blood on his smallholding at Glen outside Bloemfontein on Sunday.
According to Capt. Police spokesperson Loraine Earle said a worker came across Bester’s body around 9:00 a.m. He reportedly suffered multiple injuries. It is unknown at this stage what exactly happened.
Earle confirmed that two suspects have already been arrested in connection with the murder thanks to the close cooperation and quick action of the local farming community and police. Captain Earle thanked the community for their continued support and prompt action with the police during an emergency.
In his younger days, Bester played more than 50 games for the Free State and later also for Griekwas. He was also part of the Junior Springbok team that played against the All Blacks in 1992.
However, he abandoned his rugby career at the time and instead focused on a legal career. Bester was a legend at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court, before whom many a suspect made a first court appearance.
“Police investigations are ongoing and the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.”
