Steenkamps will not oppose Oscar’s latest bid for parole
Facebook
Convicted killer and disgraced former Paralympian athlete Oscar Pistorius is now making a desperate appeal to the Constitutional Court to overturn the decision to deny him parole.
Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013, and was denied parole in March of this year.
At the time, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) received a clarification order from the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) stating that the Bladerunner would only be eligible for parole in August 2024.
Pistorius, however, believes he now qualifies for early release considering the time he had already spent in prison.
The Paralympian spent several months at the St Albans Correctional facility in Gqeberha where he prepared to meet with Reeva’s parents in a so-called Victim-Offender-Dialogue.
Although Pistorius admitted to killing Reeva he told the court that it was a case of mistaken identity.
At the time, Reeva’s parents, June and Barry Steenkamp opposed Pistorius’ application stating that they still did not buy his version of events.
On Friday, their legal representative Tania Koen told Algoa FM News that this time around, her clients would not oppose the application.
Koen said the Steenkamp’s are now focussed on the commemoration of what would have been Reeva’s 40th birthday on Saturday.
She also expressed the family’s deep gratitude for their messages of support and encouragement during this time.
