A transgender teacher whose appearance sparked a controversy at the Halton District School Board in Ontario last year now has a new job at Nora Frances Henderson Secondary School in nearby Hamilton-Wentworth.
In a memo first obtained by the Toronto Sun, principal Tom Fisher said the school has “an obligation to uphold individual rights and treat everyone with dignity and respect” and “should the school be subject to any disruptions or protests; we are committed to communicating with you as openly and as frequently as possible to ensure student safety – and to share any operational plans.”
The plans include “having students enter and exit the building using assigned doors at entry and dismissal,” and “locking exterior doors during school hours, only using the front main doors during school hours.”
Also, the memo states, “all students and visitors will be required to use an intercom system to enter and exit the building,” and parents will be required “to email or call before coming to the school if they wish to visit to speak to an employee.”
Kayla Lemieux caused a stir among students, parents, teachers and others last year when photographs appeared online showing the shop teacher wearing what appeared to be huge prosthetic breasts. Lemieux stated they were real and, when additional photos seemed to show her without them, said those pictures were not of her.
The potential for classroom disruption is real. Last year, Oakville Trafalgar High School was subject to roadside protests, petitions, public outbursts and a string of death threats and bomb scares. In March, a school spokesperson told Postmedia that Lemieux was “not currently on active assignment” but remained employed by the board.
Since the Sun broke the news of Lemieux’s new job, the story has been picked up by media outlets in Canada and abroad, including London’s Daily Mail, The New York Post, Fox News, and several other U.S.-based organizations.
