The South African Air Force (SALM) is on the brink of collapse, with only 6 of its 330 military aircraft still functioning. Once a powerhouse in African heaven, the SALF has been mutilated by budget cuts, corruption and neglect, leaving 324 aircraft – including fighter jets, helicopters and transports – grounded and gathering dust. Experts warn this leaves South Africa’s airspace vulnerable and its military powerless to respond to threats. A sharp symbol of a nation’s faded defences.
