All foreign aid has been paused pending a review of whether funding is consistent with president’s foreign policy.
The Trump administration has issued formal instructions to the HIV/AIDS organizations they fund in SA to immediately cease work.
Millions of dollars in aid funding is now at stake as U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order suspending all foreign development aid for 90 days goes into effect.
In the last 24 hours, several Pepfar-funded health programs have been issued with “stop-work orders” where many patients living with HIV/AIDS are at risk of being cut off from life-saving care.
Gauteng-based health workers have been notified that they will not be allowed to report to duty. Even telephone support was considered work and was stopped.
The “stop-work orders” have been issued to several organizations and programs that receive funding from the U.S. Presidency’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Pepfar). Their work has been halted as a result of US President Donald Trump’s executive order – signed on Monday, 20 January – suspending all foreign development aid for 90 days, pending a review to determine whether they are “fully aligned” with US foreign policy.
President Donald Trump has also issued an executive order designed to eradicate workforce diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the federal government and the private sector. Trump said that some companies will face investigations and legal action if their programs are deemed discriminatory.
WHAT IS DEI?
The term refers to a wide range of programs and policies that supporters say promote the fair treatment and full participation of groups that have historically been underrepresented or discriminated against. DEI can include hiring and promotion policies, workplace training on “unconscious bias,” pay equity audits, mentoring and internship programs, employer-sponsored social events, and many other initiatives.Donald Trump’s orders in his first week have a huge impact on us in South Africa and are VERY good for our people. The illegalization of affirmative action (such as BEE) and the stopping of USAID has massive impacts on South Africa, but it is good for the White population who are disadvantaged as a result of BEE.
