Two men, who are believed to have escaped from Mozambique prison in December, have been arrested in Mpumalanga BY Ronelle Snyders

Two Mozambican nationals, believed to be part of the group that escaped from a Maputo prison in December, have been arrested in Mpumalanga.

More than 1,500 prisoners escaped from prison in neighboring Mozambique during the ongoing political instability and widespread protests experienced in the country at the time, following disputed election results.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) said this week that the two men, aged 25 and 33 respectively, were arrested by the security company Polsec, at Malelane, on Sunday evening.

“The two male suspects were apprehended by security officers on suspicion that they did not have documentation to be in the country,” said Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli.

“The SAPS members and other role players such as the Department of Home Affairs were brought on board. After ratification was done, the two were charged with contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa.”

“Preliminary investigation by the police indicates that the two men are believed to be part of the group that recently escaped from legal custody in Mozambique a few weeks ago. In cases like this, the SAPS works with various stakeholders, both internal and external, including crime intelligence, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Interpol, and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco),” Mdhluli said.

Police said further details about the case would be passed on in due course. Investigations are still ongoing.

The two suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the various law enforcement agencies that apprehended the two suspects.

“The vigilance and dedication shown by our law enforcement officers is crucial and commendable. We are proud of this partnership and commitment to ensure that elements of crime are dealt with holistically by all stakeholders with the understanding that the elimination of crime requires participation from every sector, Mkhwanazi said.
