JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) has described the United States of America (USA)’s plan to set up refugee centres for white Afrikaners in the country as “madness”.

According to a recent New York Times report, US President Donald Trump has established a programme called “mission South Africa” that entails turning some office spaces in Pretoria to refugee centres.

The Trump administration has announced that it’s open to taking white Afrikaners as refugees in the US as they are being persecuted in South Africa.

 

Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula says America is making unfounded claims against the South African government.

“The refugee centres, that is just madness that you can build refugee centres in a country as peaceful as South Africa and claim people are being subjected to genocide. The real genocide is happening there in the middle east, that is what needs to be curtailed.”
