VB.209.DAILY DEVOTION – Vincent van Gogh and the Gospel of Jesus Christ
Vincent van Gogh and the Gospel of Jesus Christ (by David Wood)
*******************************
On December 23, 1888, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh cut off his own ear with a razor and delivered the ear to a girl named Rachel at a local brothel. Many have assumed that van Gogh’s ear was some sort of twisted present for a prostitute he loved. However, recent research has shown that Rachel wasn’t a prostitute. She was a farmer’s daughter who had been mauled by a rabid dog. This new information about Rachel affects our understanding of van Gogh’s tragic episode. In this video, David discusses van Gogh and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Listen to the song:
Don McLean – Vincent ( Starry, Starry Night) With LyricsSONG LYRICS:
Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer’s day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soulShadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy, linen landNow, I understand what you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they’ll listen nowStarry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blueColors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist’s loving handNow, I understand, what you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they’ll listen nowFor they could not love you
But still, your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry nightYou took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you, Vincent
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as youStarry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can’t forgetLike the strangers that you’ve met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of the bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snowNow, I think I know what you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they’re not listening still
Perhaps they never will

“Sadness will last forever” -Vincent’s last word before he died.
I have never wanted to be anything but an artist. His work inspires me still at the age of 72.
I have always felt that there is something in an artist’s soul that sparks a different thought pattern and our sight sees things that others don’t.
This is true for authors and songwriters as well.
A snowflake, the way a raindrop runs down a windshield and carries the light from a neon sign in a parking lot becomes an extraordinary experience for many of us as we see beauty in many obscure places.
I haven’t heard this song in a while but it hits my soul.
I trust that you will enjoy it on this lovely afternoon.
