FREE STATE. – Charles Sekonyela, aka Moruti, and other suspects allegedly robbed a pensioner (59) of R53 000 on 21 September 2022. Warrants of arrest were issued for Sekonyela in Matjhabeng.
Capt. Stephen Thakeng says on the day in question, Sekonyela allegedly introduced himself to the victim as a car dealership under false pretenses. They had to go to Bloemfontein to register a vehicle in the pensioner’s name. During the trip, an alleged hitchhiker was given an opportunity, who first wanted to go to his house to get money to pay for the ride. At home, persons posing as police officers knocked, searched the house and found a type of gold material. Money was demanded for the release of the three persons, on which the persionary was allegedly forced to withdraw R10 000 from a bank and hand it over to the “police officers”. Sekonyela then told the pensioner he would do the change of ownership on another day. However, the pensioner never saw Sekonyela, the money or the vehicle again.
Sekonyela is wanted for extortion in Welkom in June 2021. He is also wanted for kidnapping and extortion in Odendaalsrus in April 2022.
