BeOn 2 June 2023, the Ministry of Health of Tanzania declared the end of its first documented outbreak of Marburg Viral Disease (MVD). Between March 21 and May 31, a total of nine cases (eight laboratory-confirmed and one probable) were reported. All cases were reported from Bugoba District, Kagera Region. A total of six deaths (case-death ratio 67%) were reported during the outbreak.
In line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), the declaration was made 42 days (twice the maximum incubation period for Marburg virus infection) after the last possible exposure to an MVD probable or confirmed case.
The WHO is encouraging countries to maintain most response activity for three months after the outbreak. This is to make sure that if the disease resurfaces, health authorities will be able to detect it immediately, prevent the disease from spreading again and ultimately save lives.
