  1. It’s good to hear of such successes in the fight against crime, though it’s not surprising that the sentences were passed in the Western Cape, where Bheki Cele must have less influence.

It’s just a pity that the writer of the article for South Africa Today, didn’t handle English very well. The article included a glaring sentence fragment, followed by a run-on sentence, the rest of the sentence begun by the fragment apparently simply omitted. It also contained several grammatical errors of which a number indicated confusion between singulars and plurals. Did anyone immediately understand what the unidentified person, probably Reynolds, did after receiving the proceeds of the sale of a number of properties?

I must wonder whether any proofreading took place. It seems that

“After receiving the proceeds from the sales of a number of immovable properties. [fragment] Through extensive investigation it [where is the antecedent?] revealed that Reynolds, [comma?] did not distribute the proceeds to his clients [end of sentence] instead he used the funds for personal gain.”

was meant to convey the following:

“Extensive investigation revealed that Reynolds, after receiving the proceeds from the sale of a number of immovable properties, did not distribute said proceeds to his clients, but instead, used the funds for personal gain.”
