Rape of girl (12), accused handed 2 life terms, Philippi East

As the country concluded this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the Wynberg Magistrate’s court sentenced Siphelele Bacela to two life terms in prison.

Bacela went to a neighbour’s house in Lower Cross Road, Philippi East in September 2020, where he found a 12 year old girl watching television alone.

He lured the unsuspecting victim to his house, promising to buy her chips.

She left her home with the accused who then raped her and walked her back home.

The matter was reported to the police, and the then 37 year old suspect was arrested. The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Yandiswa Jack of Nyanga Family Violence Child protection and Sexual Offences unit.

On Monday 12 December 2022, Siphelele Bacela was sentenced to two life terms in prison, after a lengthy trial in the Wynberg Magistrate’s court.

SAPS management in the Western Cape welcomes this sentence and lauds the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Jack for her outstanding work in this case.
