Farmers assist with own helicopter and drone to track down attackers, Wesselsbron

On the 23 February 2023 at about 07:15 a shooting was reported at a farm in the district of Wesselsbron, in the Free State province of South Africa.

The Station Commander, Lt Colonel Kemane Lekitlane activated the following forces Welkom K9 Unit, Welkom Flying Squad, Crime Intelligence, SAPS Airwing, SAPS Anti Gang Unit and SAPS members of Wesselsbron.

There were additional farmers of Wesselsbron and Bothaville with their private helicopter and the Drone.

A 23 year old suspect was arrested and later at about 16:30 additional three suspects aged 26, 23 and 21 were arrested.

A Winchester rifle with 47 live ammunitions stolen in a burglary at the same farm house was found hidden at a house in Monyakeng Wesselsbron and a toy gun was also found at a separate house and seized.

A pistol and two additional suspects are still on the run and the manhunt continues.

The suspects are facing House breaking and theft, Possession of unlicensed firearm and Ammunitions.

The Acting District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Brigadier Mzondi Mojafi applauded the joint operation with farmers using private helicopter and services of a drone which led to the arrests and seizure of stolen rifle from the same farm in January 2023.

This joint venture proves that together we can do more to eradicate crime in the farming community and towns.
