Dealing in rhino horns, after sentence accused to be deported to China

Shuihau Chen (50) was found guilty and sentenced by the Kempton Park District Court on Tuesday, 4 April 2023 for receiving rhino horns without a permit.

Chen was sentenced to R500 000 fine or five years imprisonment for dealing in rhino horns.

The accused was arrested in 2019 by the Middelburg based Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team in Johannesburg during a clandestine operation. He has been in custody since his arrest.

His vehicle, a VW Tiguan valued at R400 000 that was used in the commission of crime was forfeited to the State.

Chen was further sentenced to two years imprisonment without the option of a fine for two counts of contravening the Immigration Act.

The court also ordered that Chen must be deported to China after serving his sentence.
