Armed robbery, illegal firearms, 7 suspects arrested, Musina

Members of the Task Team in Musina in collaboration with Beitbridge Task Team conducted a successful joint operation that resulted in the arrest of seven suspects aged between 25 and 52 for crimes ranging from armed robbery, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms to possession of suspected stolen properties that took place during separate incidents in the Musina policing area under Vhembe District on Tuesday, 18 April 2023,

In the first incident, four suspects aged between 26 and 45 were nabbed shortly after they robbed two victims of cellphones and cash on the N1 road next to Baobab filling station.

The suspects were driving in a white VW Polo and two of them were armed with firearms during the robbery.

Members of this Task Team swiftly responded after receiving the complaint and with assistance from the community, the said vehicle was spotted on the same road driving at a high speed. A car chase ensued and when the suspects realised they were being cornered, they opened fire on the police who retaliated and all four suspects were arrested.

Two firearms with ammunition, robbed items as well as the getaway vehicle were confiscated.

The operation continued after information was received about a suspect in possession of an unlicenced firearm in Matswale location. The 52-year-old suspect was arrested and one firearm and 28 rounds of ammunition were confiscated.

The other two suspects aged 25 and 32 were arrested in the same area after their vehicle, a VW Polo silver in colour was stopped and searched. One firearm and house breaking implements were found inside the vehicle.

“Police will continue to hit hard on criminals until all illegal firearms are removed from the wrong hands. I also thank the community for the continued support in creating a crime free society,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

The suspects may be linked to several cases of robberies as police investigations unfold.

All these suspects will appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 20 April 2023, facing charges of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen properties and house breaking implements, attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
