Four friends find themselves in a firing line when they stopped at a filling station in Timbavati trust, Acornhoek to inspect their vehicle after they heard a loud bang which they mistaken it for a tyre burst on the morning of Monday 24 April 2023, at about 01:00.
According to information received, the four friends were from a night out in Chavelagaza when the victim met his untimely death.
Little did they know that whilst stopping they were exposing themselves to a dangerous situation whereby criminals were in a mission of blowing up a drop in safe.
Unexpectedly, one of the three passengers in the vehicle informed his friends that he was shot.
The 25-year-old victim was immediately transported to hospital where he was certified dead on arrival.
The filling station employees alleged during that time a group of unknown suspects invaded the filling station, instructed everyone to lie down before setting off the detonators on the drop in safe.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of money and no any other casualty was reported.
No arrest has been made and police calls in anyone who might assist to please contact Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Digoro on 082 318 9925 or contact police Crime Stop number 08600 10111 alternatively on MySAPSApp.
All information received will be treated with strict confidentiality.
The Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga SAPS Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela was disturbed by the situation where an innocent soul was lost due to criminal activity. “We have since launched an investigation and we will do our best to get the suspects behind bars. We are also banking on the community assistance for our successful investigation,” said Lieutenant General Manamela.
