Malema – ‘We are not calling for the slaughtering of white people, at least for now’ AfriForum back at court

The civil rights organisation AfriForum was in the High Court in Johannesburg on 8 May 2023, for a review application regarding the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) 2019 decision that, in their opinion, Julius Malema, leader of the EFF, did not commit hate speech in 2016 during a gathering in Newcastle.

Malema on this occasion said, among other things: “We are not calling for the slaughtering of white people, at least for now.”

In 2019, AfriForum submitted court documents to have the SAHRC’s decision reviewed.

The case is being heard by Judge Roland Sutherland.

“The list of cases where blatant double standards are applied in relation to clear hate speech committed against racial minorities in South Africa continues to grow. This trend must be stopped urgently and, through cases like this, AfriForum plays an important role in this fight,” says Ernst van Zyl, Campaign Officer for Strategy and Content at AfriForum.

The case continues on 9 May 2023.
