Western Cape police arrest suspects on possession charges

WESTERN CAPE ā€“ The determination to create a safe and secure environment in our communities yielded success when police members arrested two suspects for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and the possession of a hijacked vehicle on Sunday, 20 August 2023.

Members of Operation Restore deployed in the Khayelitsha policing precinct were busy with a roadblock in Site B, Khayelitsha when they noticed a silver VW Polo with three occupants in the vehicle who acted suspicious when they saw the police. The members attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver sped off. A high speed chase ensued and the vehicle stopped in Malati Road where the suspects jumped out of the vehicle. Police members chased the suspects on foot and managed to apprehend one adult male. Further investigations revealed that the vehicle was hijacked in Mandalay.

The suspect will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistratesā€™ Court once he has been charged.

In an unrelated intervention members of the Anti-Gang Unit conducted crime prevention operations in the Hanover Park in an effort to quell ongoing gang violence in the area. Upon conducting a search at premises in Lansburg Road, members found a 38 special revolver without a serial number and ammunition hidden in the house. A 26-year- old man was arrested and detained.

Once charged the suspect will make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistratesā€™ Court.

Furthermore members of the Maitland Flying Squad received information on Sunday 20 August 2023 about a suspicious vehicle that was allegedly used in a business robbery in Wynberg area on Saturday. The vehicle was spotted in the Cape Town area when the members attempted to intercept it but it sped off. A high speed chase ensued and the vehicle came to a standstill after it collided with the pavement. Upon searching the vehicle the members found shopping cards and vehicle hub caps in the vehicle. Four suspects aged between 33 and 43 were arrested for the possession of presumed stolen property and fraud.
